1984-2009: 25 ANNI DI NOTTURNO CONCERTANTE

Gli anni ’80 e ’90, le piccole e grandi rivoluzioni del movimento New Progressive, un sogno che si materializzava e un’Utopia che cominciava a rivivere; le nuove case discografiche, le alluvioni di ristampe dei classici degli anni ’70, i nuovi prog-festival, le fanzine come Paperlate, gruppi storici che ritornavano a esibirsi. Il Notturno Concertante ha vissuto da protagonista quel periodo. Quando Marillion, Twelfth Night, IQ e Pendragon rispolveravano il sound romantico dell’Inghilterra progressiva anche in Italia le cantine tornavano a rianimarsi: nascevano ottimi gruppi come Ezra Winston, Arcansiel, Nuova Era, Eris Pluvia, Edith e tanti altri. Gruppi con la propria storia e le proprie origini, i propri gusti e le proprie idee, accomunati da un preciso obiettivo: ritornare ad un passato glorioso, magari personalizzandolo, aggiornandolo alla luce dei tempi che passavano. Anche in Italia si ritornava a parlare di progressive. Ma soprattutto lo si riascoltava: era un new prog che vedeva il Notturno Concertante tra i maggiori rappresentanti.

Contrappunti ha chiesto a Lucio Lazzaruolo, fondatore della band irpina, di scrivere per noi qualche riga sul ventennale del Notturno. Un ventennale capitato così, quasi all’improvviso: il Notturno se lo è ritrovato addosso e aveva quasi voluto scansarlo. Ma non c’è alcun intento celebrativo, solo la curiosità di parlare di un gruppo che – tra nuovi dischi, colonne sonore, opere di remastering e digitalizzazioni di vecchio materiale – è ancora attivo, con l’entusiasmo e la vitalità di sempre.

Davvero non ci avevo pensato. Orazio Grappone, un amico di vecchia data, durante la presentazione del libro sui Genesis di Mario Giammetti ha ricordato a Donato e a chi scrive (!) che sono vent’anni che il Notturno Concertante è in attività. Ci piacerebbe festeggiare questo avvenimento in maniera più significativa ma bisognerà accontentarsi di ricordare in breve le tappe salienti di questa nostra piccola storia.

I primi esperimenti avvennero con Raffaele Villanova (l’altra metà del Notturno) nella villa comunale di Grottaminarda (AV) durante le sere d'estate. Armati di due chitarre classiche e di  indifferenza nei confronti di alcuni sarcastici commenti, cominciammo col suonare dei pezzi di Anthony Phillips (nel 1982 era uscito il terzo volume di Private Parts & Pieces, quello per due chitarre) e ben presto anche nostre composizioni. Io e Raf avevamo background molto diversi: a me piaceva il suono dell’art rock degli anni ‘70 (e stentavo a digerire tutta la melma punk e la successiva musica plastificata della new wave), lui invece suonava in un gruppo metallaro (i mitici Firebirds) e ascoltava Led Zeppelin e Iron Maiden.

Con mio sommo piacere scoprii che a Raf piaceva molto la musica acustica. Insomma quei primi esperimenti en plen air mi fecero capire che dovevo fare il gran salto. Acquistai così un registratore Teac a quattro piste e parte della musica composta durante le session estive fu immortalata grazie al multipiste. Il primo studio fu attrezzato nella mia cameretta e lì registrammo il primo demo (Notturno Concertante, 1985). Io ne ero francamente orgoglioso, felice di essere in grado di comporre e suonare la musica che tanto amavo. Le reazioni furono positive e ci incoraggiarono a continuare. Comprai quindi un costosissimo synth DX7 e registrammo un altro demo (Crystals Spirits, 1986), e poi un altro e poi ancora un altro. Riascoltandoli mi pare di poter dire che ci sono stati sempre piccoli passi in avanti e una crescente maturità musicale. Certo non avevamo un produttore che ci potesse facilitare le cose. Ma se questo è stato un male perché abbiamo dovuto imparare dai nostri errori, in compenso eravamo liberi di fare quello che più ci aggradava (senza dover dar conto a produttori assatanati solo di soldi) e abbiamo potuto lentamente crescere.

Dopo il terzo demo (My Wordless Chant, 1986) abbiamo cominciato stabilmente a suonare come gruppo. Il contributo più importante  in questo periodo fu quello di Giancarmine Tammaro (che aveva l’aspetto di un Mario Merola, ma con la voce di Fish…), che non si limitava a cantare quanto proposto, infatti il suo apporto creativo non era trascurabile in parecchi pezzi. Un altro musicista dotato era Michele Iacoviello che poi ha abbandonato, per svariate ragioni, l'ambito musicale. Partecipammo anche a Double Exposure, una prog compilation internazionale (con Anthony Phillips, Geoff Mann, Rousseau e tanti altri) prodotta da Steven Wilson dei Porcupine Tree. La registrazione dei demo e del primo album (The Hiding Place, 1989) coincise con un nuovo interesse che sembrava circondare il progressive. Cominciammo a suonare con regolarità dal vivo e a migliorare il livello delle nostre esibizioni. Per un certo periodo suonavamo nei nostri concerti una parte acustica e una elettrica più movimentata. Leggendarie furono alcune nostre performance a vari festival dell’Unità: molte persone ci attendevano con la speranza di ballare il liscio e potete immaginare le loro facce quando suonavamo una cover dei Marillion (assieme ai Genesis il gruppo più amato) o i nostri pezzi.

Il vero punto di svolta fu però la registrazione del secondo disco. Ricordo le telefonate di Mauro Moroni della Mellow Records (una persona che nei nostri confronti si è comportata in maniera sempre corretta e vorremo poter dire lo stesso dei tipi della Musea), i contatti con la CNI di Paolo Dossena, la decisione di far cantare Raffaele e l’allestimento del nostro studio (un garage di Raffaele, ben presto battezzato La casetta delle api). Avevamo un otto piste Fostex interfacciato a un computer Atari: la tecnologia entrava sempre più nelle nostre produzioni. Le lunghe session in studio, il continuare a suonare dal vivo, i miei studi di chitarra classica contribuirono a far maturare nuovi orientamenti al gruppo. Ci sentivamo più sicuri ed in grado di dire qualcosa di più personale. Il frutto di tutti questi processi fu Erewhon (1993).

News From Nowhere (1994) è una sorta di raccolta con materiale molto eterogeneo, cover e brani live. Sempre a tamburo battente abbiamo composto The Glass Tear (1995), in un’epoca in cui alla batteria si alternavano Michele e un altro musicista. The Glass Tear è il disco a cui credo di aver dato il contributo maggiore. Tra l’altro poco dopo l’uscita del disco mi diplomai in chitarra ma a differenza di tanti musicisti di estrazione classica non mi piaceva solo suonare il mio strumento. Mi piaceva molto di più il pianoforte e per ricavare qualche lira (continuavamo ad aggiornare il nostro parco-macchine) cominciammo a fare anche del piano bar. Anche questa è stata un’esperienza formativa. Tra l’altro proprio durante queste esibizioni è nata l'idea di Luz Escondida (1998), un disco solista che non rinnego ma che avrebbe meritato la collaborazione di gente più motivata. La realizzazione di questo disco coincise con un forte rallentamento dell'attività del gruppo, susseguente anche alla realizzazione del nuovo studio Transparent Music, basato sulla  registrazione digitale. Contemporaneamente cominciai a registrare i primi brani per chitarra classica che poi sarebbero stati pubblicati sul mio cd solista intitolato My favourite.

A un certo punto si diradarono anche le esibizioni live. Francamente avevo nausea del piano bar e così lentamente abbiamo ricominciato a registrare il nuovo disco, i cui brani sono stati continuamente oggetto di ripensamenti. Molti pensano che Riscrivere il passato (2002) sia un disco troppo eterogeneo, a me pare che invece questa eterogeneità sia la sua forza. Dopo anni abbiamo ricominciato a suonare dal vivo, proprio come ai bei tempi, come un duo acustico. Abbiamo sempre continuato a registrare musica strumentale, parte della quale è stata utilizzata per la colonna sonora del film Il Natale Rubato, in uscita nelle sale cinematografiche ad ottobre. Per lo stesso periodo, credo, uscirà anche il mio cd solista intitolato My Favourite, tutto basato sulla chitarra classica, contenente brani di Steve Hackett, Fernando Sor e Johann Kaspar Mertz, fra gli altri. Il titolo si riferisce non solo alla scelta di brani preferiti, ma anche ai favoriti, che sono delle particolari basette (la copertina del cd è visibile sul nostro sito)…

Infine stiamo organizzando una manifestazione musicale per fine agosto a Grottaminarda: spero che Acustica/mente sia un’occasione per sentire della buona musica e per ricominciare la nostra attività live.

Un cd più personale in cui prevalgono gli aspetti strumentali. Da notare che le parti di basso nel cd sono quasi tutte suonate da Raffaele (così come in altri brani successivi dell'epoca, in alcuni pezzi sarà Lucio a suonarlo – e come era già avvenuto in molte tracce di Erewhon)

I saw the wandering dreams

They didn't seem unreal

Frightned by their shadows

In the kingdom of illusion

Can't tell the truth from the lies

I always feel so insecure

Here I'm wasting my time

Senses of guilt suggest the best moves to my enemies

Sometimes I feel like I couldn't dream anymore,

other times I'm prisoner of my day-dream

and I'm entrapped by emotions

Eyes lost in an invisible distance

And so I'm back to my picture

I'll become a recollection of familiar face

I'm safe only in my ivory tower

Locked in the dead man's dream

A living statue which once lived a life of his own…

Like the wind

Some nights stars seem to drown in the sky

And we search in vain for a guiding light

Then we paint our pain with the darkest colours

And let the nightmares dwell our dreams

Alone in the realm of our rooms we dare to glance at our vanities

I often think that we don’t want avoid our frailties

Always searching for that guiding light

So events turn upside down our existence

…'till we are reduced to a shadow

a trembling spectre who begs for help

I know where all loves end…

As i meet people with no hope, no fear

Among the shadows of this Nosferatu life

I'm frightened to be frightened in front of this ordinary people

I can only read the frost in their minds

And I'm lost in the labyrinth of doubt

Spied by people who can't understand

What the hell I'm doing in this hopeless country

No escape from this sorrow

The hiding place

My hiding place: loneliness is our tireless ruler

It walks invisible at our side

It joins our words

It edges the margins of our eyelids

It lights with sadness the fires of our soul

We feed on its mysterious shadow

Its bewitcher shadow

Recognizing the absence of limits

For its inexplicable presence

Today I feel in my heart

A vague tenderness

I try to catch it and to bring into the light

I try to wring it from the darkness

To the depths

But I can't reach my goal

It slips from my hands

And it's shattered at the grounds of my thought

To one in paradise      

I saw your picture on the papers

You were the talk of the town

I heard about a dreadful crime

I found it hard to believe

I saw your picture on the TV

There was a man who looked like you

Someone I met long time before

Someone who was close to me

I read your words on the paper

And they didn’t mean much to me

And I couldn’t bear

That wild joy in your eyes

I really didn’t know who you were

Here is a man who lives in a land

Ruled by a wrong sense of honour

There was a strange light

Even with those monsters of normality

Waving on a lake of placidity

Among the troubles

Of this mad roundabout

Withdrawn from this world

In trance while you're looking the film of your life

You have to bear cruel tricks

From their children

So strange, so different

So glad, so close to God

Lost every trace if respectability

Since from the cradle or during their lives

Patient witness in our comedy of errors

How cruel we are to these human beings
